Former offshore racing champion Jack Carmody, 43, died from injuries sustained when his Super Cat boat crashed June 3 during an APBA Offshore race in Corpus Christi, Texas. Carmody of Leander, Texas, was driving the 42-foot-long Skater catamaran, Xtreme Carlos N' Charlie's, and Dan Jackson of Plano,Texas was throttling. The Corpus Christi event was the third stop on the 2001 APBA Offshore Pro Series tour.
The boat reportedly caught a sponson and barrel-rolled onto Carmody's side of the cockpit. Rescue divers and paramedics pulled Carmody from the boat. He was taken to a local area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Although an autopsy had not been performed at press time, Carmody reportedly died from massive head and neck injuries.
Jackson received minor injuries.
A formidable offshore competitor, Carmody won an APBA World Championship title in 1995 and an APBA National Championship title in 1997. He was inducted into the APBA Hall of Champions in 1998 and subsequently retired from racing.
Carmody returned to the sport to run in the Super Cat class with Jackson, who started offshore racing in 2000. Carmody and Jackson won their first race together at the APBA Offshore event in Fort Myers, Fla., the tour stop prior to the Corpus Christi race.
